D2D Backup - A Preferred Method For Backup

Just a few years ago disk backup became the best alternative to tape backup.  Though the tape method is still going to be used, disk backup is being touted and used more by users due to the benefits and the decreasing costs.  D2D backup which stands for disk to disk backup is a new evolving technology that has been developed to increase the speed of backups and restores.  If disaster occurs, the use of this technology will allow the restoring of lost files, lost folders and entire data system within a matter of minutes.  At a later time the data can be transferred to tape for backup and can be tightly integrated with a disk backup system.  Usually disk backup is used on a temporary basis and tape backups and optical disk storage are used for long term archival purposes.  These processes can be set up to perform automatic automated backups.

Even though disk to disk backup has become increasingly popular due to falling disk prices and shrinking of backup windows, it is not always the ideal solution. Disk to disk solutions have their limitations. Even though it is backup, it is not archival.  So in order to have the best solution it needs to be combined with a more permanent storage system such as tape or optical storage.  With tape or optical storage, multiples copies can be made at different intervals of time.

The methods of storage have greatly changed over the years.  Back in the 70's and 80's data was stored on diskettes but the storage capacity of a single diskette was very small.  Now that the internet is available with millions of domains and we have access to downloads and unlimited amount of information, more space is needed for storage and backup.

When a backup takes place a method called deduplication also known as "intelligent compression" or "single instance storage" can take place.  This process can reduce storage needs by eliminating irrelevant data.  Only one unique instance of the data is stored and can be retained on storage such as disk or tape.  With this technology only one instance of the data is stored and each subsequent instance of the data is referred back to the one saved copy.  This reduces disk space and when you reduce disk space it saves money.

As you can see there are many options when it comes to backing up your data.  D2D backup is a good choice depending on your setup and situation.  If your workplace or personal data setup needs a backup solution then do your due diligence on finding the best solution for you.  There is plenty of information on the internet available therefore take time and make a good informed decision by reading reviews and interacting with others in forums.
